The Good Book Group next meets on Wednesday 7th December at 8.00pm in Compton School hall, Compton Street, and will be looking at the nine readings used at the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols. These are: Genesis 3: 8-15, Genesis 22: 15-18, Isaiah 9: 2, 6-7, Isaiah 11: 1-9, Luke 1: 26-35, Luke 2: 1-7, Luke 2: 8-16, Matthew 2: 1-11, John 1: 1-14. We hear them so often, but do we know why these passages were chosen, and what might lie beneath the text? Come and discover more about the Christmas readings at this Good Book Group meeting – as ever, it is open to all.
St. Matthew’s on Sunday 2nd October celebrated our Harvest Festival for 2016. On the Saturday people from the congregation, decorated the church with many flowers making beautiful arrangements in autumn colours. Also, in front of the altar was a large display of tinned food, etc., presented mainly by Otterbourne school, which will be taken to the Basic Bank in Winchester.
At 6pm there was a short service of ‘songs of praise’ for harvest, and readings, also an anthem by the choir.
At 7pm everyone made their way to the village hall where a tempting display of food awaited them – quiches, salads, curried eggs, ham, prawns etc. There were also a selection of delicious deserts, cheeses. biscuits, celery etc.. No alcoholic drinks were available, but people were invited to bring their own if they wished. Tea and coffee was served.
Everyone was thanked for their hard work in the preparations, approx 40 people attended. All enjoyed themselves and the evening was a success.
At All Saints-tide we remember those we have loved but see no longer with a special service of memorial, when names are read and candles lit, hymns sung and the dignity of grief respected. This year it will be held at St Matthew’s, Otterbourne, 30th October 6pm.
Of course, the service is open to all, if you would like a special name to be read out please just let me know at email@example.com.
A great day out was had on 26th June when St Matthew’s took to the road and brought a carnival procession to Otterbourne Road.
It will work even if you haven’t a facebook account – and don’t want one.
