Better than Basics – support for Winchester Basics Bank

This year we are keen to once again support Winchester Basics Bank at Christmas time. It must be very difficult to be surrounded by shops full of Christmas treats and to be in a situation that makes it almost impossible to provide the basics for your family, let alone some luxury items.   Winchester Basics Bank helps many families in our area and further afield to provide for their families when they are experiencing such challenging times. Last year,  we were able to make a difference to these families by providing a few luxury items too. If you would like to help, you may want to keep a look out for opportunities to buy one and get one free, with the ‘free’ item perhaps being donated to the Basics Bank.   Suggested donations include: Chocolates, tubs of sweets, selection boxes, chocolate tree decorations, boxes of mince pies, Christmas puddings, Christmas cakes, chocolate logs, tubs of savoury snacks (Twiglets, Cheese Footballs, Cheeselets etc), boxes of Christmas biscuits, UHT milk and juice, tinned fruit, jams, jelly, custard, Angel Delight and gift packs of toiletries for both Ladies and Gentlemen.   There will be donations boxes both in Otterbourne School and in St Matthew’s Church to receive any donations you would like to make. All donations will be taken to the Basic Bank on Monday 19th December so that they can be distributed to families before Christmas.   Thank you for your support.

We hear them so often, but do we know why these passages were chosen, and what might lie beneath the text? Come and discover more about the Christmas readings at this Good Book Group meeting – as ever, it is open to all.

Harvest at St Matthew’s

St. Matthew’s on Sunday 2nd October celebrated our Harvest Festival for 2016.  On the Saturday people from the congregation, decorated the church with many flowers making beautiful arrangements in autumn colours. Also, in front of the altar was a large display of tinned food, etc., presented mainly by Otterbourne school, which will be taken to the Basic Bank in Winchester.

At 6pm there was a short service of ‘songs of praise’ for harvest, and readings, also an anthem by the choir.

At 7pm everyone made their way to the village hall where a tempting display of food awaited them – quiches, salads, curried eggs, ham, prawns etc. There were also a selection of delicious deserts, cheeses. biscuits, celery etc.. No alcoholic drinks were available, but people were invited to bring their own if they wished.  Tea and coffee was served.

Everyone was thanked for their hard work in the preparations, approx 40 people attended. All enjoyed themselves and the evening was a success.

Of course, the service is open to all, if you would like a special name to be read out please just let me know at .
